This week’s Vendor Spotlight is on Cakes by Graham. And if you have attended a wedding or special event in Richmond over the past 20 years you have probably tasted one of Graham’s cakes. We don’t like to pick favorites from our vendor friends but I can tell you that when we need a cake we go to Graham. He has helped our family celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and just about any special event that you may need a cake for!
1. How did you get started in the Cake Business in Richmond?
When customers call the cakery to order cakes they often ask “How did Graham end up in Richmond, VA as a Cake Decorator?”. Graham joined the British, Army Catering Corps at age 16 and served 16 years after his 2 year apprenticeship.
He started decorating cakes as a hobby for family and friends and became a master Chef Instructor in the British Army. Graham entered Cake Decoration competitions and won several Gold Medals. In 1989, he was selected to serve in an exchange program, training the American Army at Ft. Lee, Virginia. During this time, he selected and trained the US Army Culinary Arts Team and won a Gold Medal at the National Restaurant Association Show in Chicago. In 1991 he came out of the army and worked at two local Richmond Bakeries. Cakes by Graham was started in 1994. He enjoys creating unique, individually designed cakes and the personal interaction with each bride.
The business has grown in the past 21 years to where he has bought a building to house Richmond’s only Custom Cakery. The new facility has been open since March 2, 2004. The location is at 718 N. Cleveland Street, Richmond, Virginia 23221
2. How many cake and icing flavors do you offer and what are the three most popular?
The most popular flavors are French Vanilla, Almond, Lemon, Chocolate, Golden Butter Pound, French Vanilla Chip, Amaretto, Champagne, Butter Rum, Marble Choc/Vanilla and Chocolate Chambord.
However, we offer an extensive list of flavor combinations to suite everyone’s taste. We have 39 Standard Batter Flavors, 20 Liqueur Batter Flavors, 8 Frosting Flavors and 15 filing options.
3. What is YOUR favorite cake flavor? Graham’s personal favorite Chocolate Chambord.
4. How many cakes do you bake a year? About 1,000
5. What is the most unique request you have gotten for a cake?
We have made 2 wedding cakes with tie-dye coloring and one cake with camouflage coloring and Pokemon cake toppers.
