Katie and Cameron’s Upper Shirley Vineyards Wedding: When life gives you lemons make lemonade. Something no bride wants to hear on her wedding day. Well, that is exactly what Katie and Cameron had to do when the unrelenting buckets of rain didn’t cease to end before their outdoor ceremony began. Through it all, we have never seen a couple have more fun than these two did. And we have to add that having the most accommodating and loving bridal party is the ticket.

Planning the perfect outdoor vineyard wedding at Upper Shirley Vineyards was the goal and even Mother Nature could not prevent a few outdoor portraits, after the ceremony, amongst the rows of loaded grapevines.

The day began with limitless laughter, good food, and a few great spirits as the wedding party prepared for the festivities. Cameron’s bow tie and the groomsmen’s handmade fishing lure boutonnieres matched his theme of the outdoor life. Katie and the ladies adorned monogram robes and sipped champagne while Mallory and the team from Lou Stevens Glam Squad prepped the women in fitting hair and makeup strong enough to withstand the weather outside.

The team from Elevated Events quickly turned the outside covered deck into the ceremony location as last minute wine tasting guests vacated the premises.

As the ceremony began the rain slowed to a drizzle and with a kiss to seal the deal, the foreboding skies filled with storm clouds were quickly replaced by a thick blanket of overcast clouds that would hold throughout the rest of the night.

Not a eye was dry or a single belly not sore from all of the laughter during the introducing of the wedding party and the heartfelt toasts from Mark, the father of the bride. After an amazing dinner, they had a quick cutting of the cake so the band could call for the first dance.  As if they had not even rehearsed Cameron lead Katie effortlessly and joyfully around the dance floor surrounded by a sea of admiring family and friends. Not to be outdone by his new son in law, Mark had a few surprises up his sleeve. He and Katie broke into an impromptu sequence of dance moves that brought everyone onto the dance floor and they didn’t stop until the end of the evening.

Jamie’s favorite moment happened when Cameron took over the and the stage on the keyboards to play a few hits for his new wife while everyone else clapped and sang along. This evening was so much FUN!

The night concluded with everyone on the dance floor for one last dance, followed by a spectacular sparkler send off for the bride and groom. We can officially say that we may not have ever seen so many smiles and so much laughter. Katie and Cameron had a fantastic evening, spite what Mother Nature dealt them at the beginning of the day.

The Wood Family Portrait Session

The Wood Family has a lot to celebrate this year so they documented this special moment in time with a family portrait session. We visited their family home to take these images and we always feel that makes just that much more special. At the time of this session Katie was engaged (she is now married – look for that post soon) so they wanted one last portrait before the family was expanded by one. In addition, Cliff is retiring as the COO of Carmax so they had a very exciting summer ahead of them.

It was so much fun to include their dogs and their favorite hockey team, The Capitals. We love it when families include special touches like this that let the viewer see a little glimpse into their lives. It was a great session and we love how these three images turned out.

There are many reasons to get have family portraits taken by a professional photographer but here are some of our favorites:

  1. Document special times that you will want to relive over and over again.
  2. Life happens and you have to take the time to make these memories while you can.
  3. To capture growth
